Sign Text Detection from Outdoor Scene. Members: Xiangjian (Sean) He, Wenjing Jia
This research aims to design and implement an efficient and robust system for text detection on Hexagonal Image Structure (HIS).
This system will be able to detect and read text on various signs from outdoor scene through analysing images/video using computer vision and pattern recognition techniques. These signs include road signs, traffic signs, street signs, etc., as well as more variable forms such as shop signs, house numbers, bill boards, scoreboards, etc. that mainly contain text.
A major objective is to develop an efficient algorithm to detect and extract text as we move in outdoor scene by recognising the text from the images based on hexagonal image structure. The system to be developed in this research will be fast, robust, accurate, and easy to implement. In the proposed research program, we will make a good use of the special features of hexagonal image structure, and its existing mathematical theory to develop the distributed text detection algorithms.
The project is funded by the University of Technology, Sydney under the program of Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.
